The start of spring quarter signals wonderful weather for biking at UCLA! It also signifies a new quarter to keep the ball rolling for the Bike Team. With all the logistics taken care of in regards to our efforts from last quarter, we have started the data collection process. Much like the Energy Team, the bulk of our research will be done this quarter.
After meeting with our stakeholders and getting the thumbs up to start surveying, our team has been working really hard to obtain responses for our survey from students living on the Hill. Our strategy has been to stand outside dining halls with a sign explaining who we are and to randomly ask students to take the survey on our laptops. Because it would be easier to have a table when students take the survey, we had to attend the Residents’ Association Meetings last week to request tables and chairs, with the approval from Residential Life. Unfortunately, we could not get tables for last week, so we had to make do with the benches outside of the dining halls. For this week however, we have gotten approval to set up a table in front of Covel Dining during lunch and in front of Bruin Plate Dining during dinner.
To get the most number of responses, we decided to survey outside the dining halls at peak times such as noon to 2 pm and 6 to 8 pm. This has proved useful especially around Bruin Plate which has a lot of traffic at those times. We will continue to conduct surveys throughout this week and hope to secure around 450 to 500 responses. Additionally, our team has posted the survey on a couple of Facebook pages of floors on the Hill.
We have also started collecting names for students who are interested in participating in our focus group which will be held next Thursday. This will comprise of bikers and non-bikers alike who will share their opinions on a multitude of aspects about biking at UCLA.
Furthermore, the Bike Team is excited to share our progress with others at the Earth Day Fair next week! Our team is brainstorming creative ideas to showcase our data with the use of infographics, and to come up with an interactive element to engage participants. We can’t wait to see other teams’ progress at the Earth Day Fair as well!
