The Sustainable Foods Team is getting very involved on campus, and it’s exciting! I just came back from a food waste panel hosted by the UCLA Student Food Collective, where our very own Maddy Routon was one of the panelists. She discussed our team’s research and expanded on all the issues surrounding food waste. This was a great event to educate fellow students about the impacts of food waste and its interconnectedness with multiple other modern day issues. Maddy also inspired students to become empowered rather than intimated by the depth of the food waste problem.
People in many different fields of work can be a part of the solution. You can all do your part to limit food waste by cleaning your plates! We urge you all to come to our “No Food Left Behind Challenge” next Tuesday, May 6th at dinner at Covel, where you can see our data for yourself and try to limit the pounds of waste produced during one meal period. Our main focus now is trying to reach as many people as possible to share our data with. If everyone understood the consequences of food waste and the money and effort that go into food production, our world would be much less wasteful. We hope to make students value their food so that they are inclined to produce zero waste. If you are intrigued and ready to take on the challenge, we’ll see you on Tuesday!
