Pauley attendee: Slurp, slurp; munch, munch. Wow, this basketball game is so good! I should leave a bit early to avoid traffic. Let me just throw my trash away into this big gray bin.
Zero-Waste Pauley Action Research Team Member: Shudder, twitch. My senses are tingling. Something unsustainable is happening at Pauley!
If we leave Pauley Pavilion the way it is now, it will never become a Zero-Waste facility. As of now, Pauley does not have bins designated for composting. Therefore, it is not possible to divert 100% of trash away from the landfill. The above scenario is magnified by hundreds at every basketball game. That’s a lot of waste going to the landfill! This unsustainability must stop! Cue, the Zero-Waste Pauley Team. Through their unwavering will, their keen minds, and their superb googling skills, Pauley’s fate will be changed forever. The team is currently researching new composting, recycling, and landfill bins. Our team will use these three bins to fight landfill waste to help Pauley achieve zero-waste! The old bins will either be relocated to outdoor facilities, be designated for non-traditional waste, or donated.
You can trust our team’s eye for style: the new bins will be sleek and welcoming, in addition to being versatile. Combined with our signs that will be made specifically for Pauley Pavilion, attendees will become informed on how to sort their trash. Our custom-made signs will also grace the “Harry Potter” bins that are in the walkways between each section. These bins blend into the Pauley décor so well, that people don’t even notice (even we didn’t notice them the first time we came!). The new bins will strike a balance between being unobtrusive, while still being noticeable. Our bins will draw the attendee’s attention while our informative signs will guide them to successfully sort their trash.
Pauley attendee: Slurp, slurp; munch, munch. Wow, this basketball game is so good! I should leave a bit early to avoid traffic. Let me just throw my trash away into this big grey bi-. Wait a minute, those bins aren’t here anymore. Now there’s a compost bin! And a landfill bin! Let me read these cool looking signs…Ok so I should spit my gum into landfill and throw my pizza box into compost. Hmm. There’s still dressing in my container. Let me just wipe that with a napkin. Now the napkin goes into compost, and the plastic container is now clean enough to go into recycling!
Zero-Waste Pauley Team Member: Ah, zero waste feels good.
