For the Grand Challenge Team, this week has been all about finalizing interview procedures! We are continuing to review the database of the 120 professors and faculty who have signed on to the initiative.
In order for us to complete our goal, we prioritized and categorized each professor. We filtered through the list of experts within the Institute of the Environment and Sustainability, and narrowed it down to those working on water technology, energy generation, or energy storage. After finalizing our interview questions and emails, our team conducted background research on the individual work of each professor and the graduate students working in their labs. By dividing the newly edited list among our five group members, we were able to efficiently gather a substantial amount of in-depth information as it applies to the Grand Challenge. As mentioned, we are preparing everything we can before the upcoming interviews.
So what’s next? The team met up and discussed our availability for interviews. Due to the large number, we decided to sort professors into groups of different interview weeks. Within the next week, we will be meeting with Michelle Popowitz, the Vice Chancellor for Research at UCLA, and Tama Hasson, the Assistant Vice Provost for Undergraduate Research at UCLA, to send out the official email and discuss the Grand Challenge grant. Prep work is nearly done, and interviews are just around the corner!
We are the driving force behind one of six ambitious, yet achievable goals. We want a Los Angeles that is 100% sustainable in renewable energy and local water sourcing, and we will continue seeking ways in which students can become involved in this initiative.
